Fox trap

telaypa “trap, snare”
Language: St. Lawrence Island Yupik

This is a spring-loaded trap for foxes, made from a hollowed whale rib. The killing arm has sharp ivory spikes and is held inside between tightly wound-up sinew cords. When a fox pulled some bait on the end of a string it released the cocked arm, which smashed down on its head.
