John Phillip, Sr.

John Phillip, Sr.

John Phillip, Sr. (Ayaginaar) is from the village of Kongignak on the Bering Sea coast, and is a speaker of the Yup’ik language. Mr. Phillip served on the board of the Calista Elders’ Council and contributes to his community as a storyteller and instructor on cultural traditions in the schools. He served as an advisor for the Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic, as well as to the exhibition The Living Traditions of Yup’ik Masks; Agayuliyararout, Our Way of Making Prayer.
