Sven Haakanson, Jr

Sven Haakanson, Jr

Sven Haakanson was born in 1967 in Old Harbor on Kodiak Island. He has a PhD in anthropology from Harvard University and specializes in the documentation and preservation of Sugpiaq language and culture. Dr. Haakanson was the Executive Director of the Alutiiq Museum in Kodiak and was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 2007. He is currently an associate professor at the University of Washington and curator of Native American collections at the Burke Museum. He also serves as a board member of Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, and as an exhibit advisor for the Living Our Cultures exhibit. [Last updated in 2013]
