Lucille Antowock Davis

Lucille Fedosia Antowock Davis was born in 1924 at Karluk on Kodiak Island. She passed away in September 29, 2012. Her parents were Fedosia and Matfay Antowock. She was raised speaking only Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) and recalls being punished for using her Native language at school. Her godmother, Pelegia Alpiak, was influential in Mrs. Davis’ upbringing and taught her to be a midwife. She was a storyteller, teacher and advisor to Alutiiq heritage projects, including the Smithsonian exhibition Looking Both Ways: Heritage and Identity of the Alutiiq People. [last updated in 2013]
