Vera Kaneshiro

Vera Kaneshiro (Oovi) was born and raised in Gambell and resided in Anchorage when she passed away November 19, 2013. She was a speaker of the St. Lawrence Island Yupik language. Mrs. Kaneshiro worked with the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for 30 years on educational materials and as an author of A Dictionary of the St. Lawrence Island / Siberian Yupik Eskimo Language. She also taught Alaska Native Studies at the University of Alaska Anchorage and assisted with the translation and editing of Sharing Knowledge project materials. [Last updated in 2013]
