John Apassingok

John Apassingok

John Apassingok was born in Gambell on St. Lawrence Island and still resides there today. He is a speaker of the St. Lawrence Island Yupik language and is a subsistence hunter and fisher. He has also worked as a teacher on the island, and in 2007 he helped some of the students to build a angyapik (traditional walrus-skin boat). He also makes art out of Walrus ivory.
