Kenneth Toovak

Kenneth Toovak

Kenneth Toovak (Utuayuk) was born in 1923, in Barrow and passed away November 19, 2009. He was a speaker of the North Slope dialect of Iñupiaq. Mr. Toovak worked as a technician for U.S. Navy petroleum exploration operations in the 1940s and as an operations manager at the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. He contributed his knowledge of sea ice and ice dynamics to numerous scientific projects and in 2003 was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Laws from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He was a board member of the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium and served as an advisor to The People of Whaling exhibition at the Iñupiat Heritage Center. [Last updated in 2013]
